RACHEL FULTON AWARD
Rachel Fulton has been a leader in political
and humanitarian issues in Black Hawk County since the early 1950s. She was first lady of the State of Iowa when husband,
Robert Fulton, was governor. She was elected to the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors giving significant input on issues
of mental health, youth shelters, revision of St. Francis Hospital on Independence Avenue, AIDS housing, conditions at the
County Home, Cedar Valley food bank, and the condition of the county jail.
She was President of
Black Hawk-Bremer League of Women Voters and gave distinctive leadership. She loyally served the democratic party on state
committees to elect John F. Kennedy, Harold Hughes,
Birch Bayh, Walter Mondale, and others. She served on the Grout
Museum board, various Iowa legislative committees, and was acting Veteran Affairs Administrator.
Rachel
received the SERTOMA Service to Mankind Award, SIDS Hospis Award, and the Catholic Charities Award for her service to the
poor.
Rachel Fulton has made significant contributions to the welfare of the citizens of
Black Hawk County. Her rich record of service has been memorialized by the creation of the Rachel Fulton Award to be given
at the Black Hawk-Bremer League of Women Voters holiday meeting each November. The award will recognze women who have distinctive
records of humanitarian and political service. And of course, it was most fitting for League to recognize Rachel Fulton
as the first recipient of this grand award.
