Local Issues
 
The following program was adopted at the April 2008 Annual Meeting for League year 2008-2009. 
 
    1.   Continuing monitoring of county landfills, chemicals, toxic waste disposal and recycling taking action if necessary.
 
    2.    Monitor the funding and delivery of mental health services in Black Hawk and Bremer counties.
 
    3.    Monitor service delivery and funding sources for public libraries in Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Waverly, Evansdale, Hudson, LaPorte City, Dunkerton, Janesville, and Jesup, extending League support as needed.
 
     4.   Continue monitoring efficiency and effectiveness of county and city governments.
 
     5.  Advocate for affordable professional early childhood education and affordable quality child care service in Black Hawk and Bremer counties.
 
     6.   Study proposed changes at Waterloo Municipal Airport.
 
     7.   Monitor Home Land Security and Civil Liberties in Black Hawk and Bremer counties.
 

AIRPORT STUDY
 
In July 2008 League began a study group on the Waterloo Regional Airport. A committee of E. J. Gallagher, Jeri Thorrnsberry, Cindy Wells,Willie Mae Wright, and Carol Cooper, chair, met to discuss the problems in gerneral.Appropriate materials found on lne wrer reviewed. Cindy Wells volunteered to contact the mayor's office to get minutes of the Airport Commission minutes. Those were received by committee whch will meet in August or Septemebr to decide directions. Rouxle Roelofse, a student from the UNI spring 2008 Capstone Class, was unable to atend the July meeting.

BOTTLE BILL
 
Jo Ann Finkenbinder has given Black Hawk Bremer League leadership in the Cedar Valley Bottle Bill Coalition (CVBBC) which is organized to preserve and expand the container deposit law known as the bottle bill. LWV organized it 5 y ears ago when the law was openly attacked. Other member organizations are Cedar Falls Women's Club, Waterloo and Cedar Falls AAUWs, Cedar Prairie Chapter of the Sierra Club, IA Recycling Association, United Methodist Women of First United Methodist Church CF, and the UNI Student Nature Society.  The Coalition will be active in the 2009 Legislative Session.
